I certainly do not put myself in the category of "independent creative", but for some reason, I have gotten so much out of this podcast. I subscribe to the newsletter that goes along with the podcast and this one just reached my inbox this morning. It hit my heart in all the best ways. I just wanted to share. It was written by Blake Stratton, the author of the podcast.
Don't believe the ticket.
How long does it really take to fly home?
The flight to Chicago form Nashville is a little over an hour, gate-to-gate. Seems nice when compared to an 8-hour drive, right?
But the short flight I bought the ticket for is not the complete journey. Flying home actually takes about 6 hours.
Huh?
Here's the actual journey:

Huh?
Here's the actual journey:
- 1/4 hour drive to the airport
- up to an hour for check-in and security checks
- at least 1/2 hour at the gate waiting to board
- 1/2 hour of actually boarding and getting ready
- Oftentimes, at least 1/4 hour taxiing around the runway. Sometimes you just sit there for 3/4 hour.
- AIR TIME, finally.
- Taxiing around arrival airport for usually 1/4 hour.
- Deplaning for another 1/4 hour
- Waiting for my bags at baggage claim (easily up to 3/4 hour at Midway in Chicago).
- 1 hour drive from the airport to my folks’ house.
So, quite conservatively, that adds up to a 6-hour journey.
Ok. Who cares?
The other day, my girlfriend and I decided we’d like to start a new habit. All it would take is 20 minutes each morning. Easy, right?
Both of us thought, “Well hey, let’s start this right away! There’s no better time than the present, right? Carpe Diem, y’all!”

Sometimes, in the name of bravery, we rush into great ideas.
The reality is that our morning habit costs much more than just 20 minutes. It means cutting out 20 minutes each night so we can still get the rest we need. And it so happened that for the next several days, my girlfriend and I had preexisting commitments in the night and/or the morning.
If we chose not to consider this, if we chose blindly to "Carpe Diem!" what would happen when we started our new habit?
Ya, we’d suck at it. We would think, “Oh I can’t handle a simple habit! What’s the matter with me?”

Maybe you feel like a failure. And maybe the truth is you haven’t failed, but you have simply rushed too quickly into your destiny.
My airplane ride home is takes much more than my ticket says. But which of those things on that list is worth glossing over?
Skipping any one of those steps, those tedious and boring steps, could result in me not getting home…or much worse!
Careful planning and preparation is not a sexy idea.
Get paid for your passion in 30 days or less!
Get in shape in just 5 minutes a day!!
Those are sexier promises. But don’t believe the time on the ticket.

Great journeys often require great preparation.
Quitting your job to pursue your dream may feel like bravery, but true courage will diligently count the costs.
So don’t let the outward appearance of taxiing around a runway for an hour fool you.
You are courageous.
Cheers,
B
